Post by Paul Nitishin, proud platoon leader for The Determinators!

As platoon leader for The Determinators, I have to say this is an aptly named group. We are now in the middle of the fifth week, and we have two people in this group who have lost five percent of their original starting body weight so far! Do you know how hard you have to work to do that?

More importantly, from my point of view, we have people trying new exercise classes, like step and our regularly scheduled spinning classes. We have a participant trained in martial arts who is leading kickboxing classes for other members of her Biggest Loser platoon.

Most of these people never came to the gym before, but now they come every day. One person even drives in on Saturday to work out in our fitness center. It’s working; people are realizing that exercise is not only good for you, but that it feels good to be active and mobile. The fact that they can also be successful at losing weight with some diet modification is an added bonus. My platoon members tell me they are now wearing clothes they haven’t been able to feel comfortable wearing in a while. Wow!

At this point in the 12-week program, we have started ramping up our workouts in intensity. It doesn’t take as long for my platoon members to burn 500 calories on the cardio equipment, so now we’re aiming for a 600-calorie session. In the strength programs, weights are increasing as we become stronger and more adept at the exercises. In my boot camp classes, I am increasing the number of reps performed with less rest time between exercises. People are going to the regularly scheduled group exercise classes and fully participating. I think that’s where the real gold is.

See you all in the gym!
