I may have to change my name…

I may have to change my name. When I started this program, “diet” was a four-letter word. I just did not want to give up my favorite foods. I wanted to be like my husband, who can eat anything he wants and never gain a pound. But during the past weeks, I have found that I don’t have to give up on favorites, I just need to adjust my choices.
Let me explain: I love chips and salsa. It is my all-time favorite snack. So now, when I really feel I “need” salsa and chips, I open the bag and take out seven. Not grab the whole bag and sit down with it, but I remove seven chips (one serving), and I place them on a plate with the salsa (salsa is fat free). I then have my “favorite” without eating my weight in chips.
Yes the chips are “bad.” They’re high in salt, loaded with fat, and there’s not a good calorie in the whole bag. But it is a favorite. So I get my “fix” without getting too many calories. Then I add the “cost” of my snack to my daily allowance and reduce my calorie and salt intake on my next meal.
I have been eating all of my favorites with “portion control.” Yes, we all know that ugly term. But really, your body only needs so much. That entire extra really is extra. So, I am not really a deprived HungryGirl; I am satisfied. My body is getting what it needs. I am getting what I want. And guess what: I am still losing weight—more than 14 pounds so far!

Here’s a way to make healthier chips, that don’t take a lot of time, effort, or culinary skill.
1. Buy some corn tortillas.
2. Preheat the oven to 375.
3. Use a knife or pizza cutter to cut each tortilla into 8 wedges. Two tortillas are about 50 calories, so 16 chips is a caloric bargain.
4. Line a cookie sheet with foil (easy clean-up!), and lay the wedges out.
5. Bake 7-8 min, or until the chips are crispy.
Options: Spray the chips lightly with cooking spray and the spice(s) of your choice before baking.
Enjoy!
Thanks so much. I will try this recipe this weekend. Good to have “healthy” choices.
Thanks, HungryGirl, for sharing your experience. It’s great that you’ve been able to lose 14 pounds so far and I hope you the best.
I definitely struggle with overeating especially if there are snacks laying around the office, lab space, home, etc. How do you deal with those temptations that are conveniently waiting to be eaten? Do you have any specific strategies to curb your intake in these cases?
