I am new to exercise. How can I compete with students or serious athletes?

Most of my team members are working people who are just getting started with an exercise program. How can we possibly compete against teams of students who play club sports and have lots of free time for exercise during the day or younger employees training to run the Boston Marathon or compete in bicycle races?

You can’t. But you don’t have to! Getfit is not a competition, and while many teams rack up far more exercise time than the minutes required for each week’s goal, they have no better chance of winning weekly prizes or the grand prize than teams who just barely reach each weekly goal. The weekly goals may be a challenge for beginning exercisers, but during the program, the getfit@mit website (http://getfit.mit.edu) offers lots of tips for increasing your minutes from week to week. And remember that your team’s standing is based on the average of all members’ exercise totals. This means that the exercise-minute totals of team members who exceed a given week’s goal can be used to offset lower totals posted by team members who do not meet the goal. To remain eligible for the grand prize a team’s average must meet the exercise goal for at least 10 of the 12 weeks of the challenge.
