Learning to be a follower (what?!?!)

OK, it happended.  At the dance after the lesson (where we get to dance with instructors and beginners alike), I stepped on someone's foot.  The song was fast, I didn't quite know the moves, and it happened.  My parter was gracious, the ice was broken, and we moved on with the dance.  Phew...
This week the lesson focused on how to be a good lead or follow.  Since I am learning to follow, this week's lesson was aimed at only moving as and when directed.  Even when I *know* where or what I am supposed to be doing.  You may not know me very well, community, but this is HARD.  I plan, anticipate and sometimes overthink.  I focus on making sure I'm doing my share of the work according to the plan.  I do not wait to be led around and directed.  I do not let my partner/teammate falter if I can lend a hand (or footwork.)  But, in doing so, I'm not giving my partner a chance to become a good lead themselves by learning how to give me the cues I need to follow.
So...I though of babbling brooks and hiking.  Fashion week.  Anachronism in famous works of art.  What I was going to make for dinner the next day.  And I became a better follower.
When I stopped thinking about my footwork and where I should be going (by not paying attention to the directions the leads were getting so that I wouldn't know what move we would be practicing), I started to get it.   When I wasn't trying to get ahead of my lead, I was more receptive to what they were trying to make me move.  (My muscles were still pretty stiff, as a result of the weekend shoveling.)  And it was liberating--finally, something I didn't have to plan and overthink!  Just follow and lead the thinking to the lead.  I'm liking this dance thing more and more...
Note:  Technology fail.  I though this blog posted after last week's lesson (apparently it did not, so I'm reposting now.)  Apologies.

This was the hardest thing for me when I took swing dance lessons. I'm still not very good at it.

This was great to read  - I love it when exercise helps me get out of my head a little bit.
