This week’s (Week 10) getfit@mit “Creative Exercise” team contest challenges you to look deep within yourselves and find some of that fabled MIT ingenuity.
To win this special team prize, just come up with a creative exercise involving three or more team members, describe it in writing, document it with one or more digital photos, and submit everything by email to getfit@mit.edu by 5 p.m. on Tuesday, April 7, 2009 with the subject line “Creative Exercise.” If getfit organizers deem your team’s exercise the most creative of 2009, you’ll win a fabulous prize.

Haiku contest winner announced
March 16, 2008
Mary Agnes Mullowney of team Mini-ME captured the eternal struggle between early-morning exercise and more sleep in 17 syllables to take home top honors in the 2009 getfit@mit haiku contest. Mullowney, an administrative assistant in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, won a $25 gift certificate to the Miracle of Science Bar+ Grill for this entry:
Running shoes lined up…
rosy dawn glows through the blinds…
a warm bed beckons.
Mullowney, whose writing has been published in Rune (MIT’s literary magazine), said her poem focuses on the “decision point” everyone faces about whether or not to exercise. She tried to portray the tension as “something you see, something you feel–the warmth of the bed, the colors of the sky.” (more…)
Is your team on target?
March 16, 2009
Don’t fall off the wagon now! If your team has been keeping up with the weekly exercise goals, keep on keeping on, because your consistency could win you a fabulous prize in this week’s special prize drawing. At the end of Week Eight, we’ll be awarding a special prize to a team whose average has met or exceeded the weekly goal for Weeks One through Eight of the fitness challenge.
But if your team isn’t eligible for this drawing, don’t despair. You’ll remain eligible for the end-of-challenge grand prize–and all the bragging rights that go with it–as long as your team’s average meets the goal for at least 10 of the 12 weeks of this year’s challenge. So keep exercising!

Pick up your tee-shirts this Thursday!
March 10, 2009
Official 2009 getfit@mit tee-shirts will be available for pick-up this week at special getfit@mit midpoint events on campus and in Lexington on Thursday, March 12. The Lexington event will be at the Lincoln Laboratory Fitness Center from noon to 1 p.m., and the campus event takes place in the Bush Room (10-105) from noon to 1:30 p.m.
All getfit participants are invited to attend one of these events to enjoy light refreshments and register for door prizes, but because we have a lot of tee-shirts to give out in a short period of time, we’re asking that each team send only one representative to the tee-shirt table to pick up shirts for the entire team. So, pick a representative from your team–and make sure he or she knows your team name! Once your team’s representative provides the team name, we’ll be able to access information on each team member’s requested shirt size.

Enduring Turtles has team spirit!
March 5, 2009
Congratulations to Enduring Turtles, winner of the Week Five “Team Spirit” competition. Enduring Turtles topped 13 entrants in this special team challenge by exercising in groups of three to seven team members on six occasions during Week Five. Their group activities included attending classes in aerobics, boot camp, spinning, and weight training with stability. For their efforts, they’ve each won a $20 gift card to Flatbread.
The team consists of eight members, five of whom have participated in getfit since 2005. The team was originally made up of frequent attendees of the noontime classes at the MIT Lincoln Laboratory Fitness Center. “We made a special effort to attend noontime classes together for Team Spirit week,” said team captain Maria Keller. “And seven of us were able to get out for a weekend walk.”
Other top contenders in the Team Spirit challenge included Cycling Sistas, who did a lot of—you guessed it—cycling; GabLab GETFAT, who swam, biked, ran, and ice skated together; and Cyndi Lou’s Losers, whose activities included a step class and upper-body strength training.
Other teams reported a variety of additional group activities, including running, yoga, weight training, and tunnel walks.

Great honor awaits
The haiku contest winner.
Also a great prize.
You guessed it! It’s the getfit@mit haiku contest, and it’s happening this week! Can you express the essence of getfit, encourage other participants to keep exercising, and expound on the many rewards of fitness? Great! Now can you do it in 17 syllables?
Submit your entries by email to getfit@mit.edu, and put “Haiku” in the subject line. Contest is open to all getfit participants with a limit of two entries per person. Get your entries in by the end of Week Six–that is, no later than midnight on Tuesday, March 10. We’ll post our favorites on the getfit website and announce the winner during Week Seven.

On-campus exercise opportunities abound!
February 23, 2009
Looking for creative ways to increase your exercise minutes now that the weekly goals are becoming more challenging? How about some international folk dancing… or underwater hockey?
In addition to a number of getfit-sponsored events, on-campus exercise opportunities abound, and, best of all, most are absolutely free.* For example, many people don’t realize that MIT’s club sports are open to all MIT community members and affiliates. The MIT Community Badminton Club even has separate groups for student and non-students. Club sports don’t involve cutthroat competition—just a chance to participate in, or learn more about, a sport or activity that interests you.
Want to do some ballroom dancing or learn how? Go to a Sunday afternoon workshop sponsored by MIT’s Ballroom Dance Club. Or try contra dancing or Israeli dancing with the MIT Folk Dance Club. There are also clubs for several forms of martial arts, rowing, men’s and women’s ultimate table tennis, and many others.
For something a bit less vigorous, you can always join the Walking Club, an activity of the Working Group on Support Staff Issues. They walk on Wednesdays at 12:15 p.m.; details are available in the group’s event calendar. But if you’re ready to get wet and out of breath, consider underwater hockey. Yes, it’s a real sport – it involves a lead puck on the bottom of the pool). All you need is a bathing suit and a willingness to try something different.
*Although participation is free, because of location, some events require an athletic card or purchase of a DAPER day pass.
Week Three “Winter Games” medalists
February 20, 2009
Congratulations to our gold-medalists, Cycling Sistas, who bicycled their way to the top of the Week Three “Winter Games” competition. The team, made up of undergraduate and graduate students, are competitive cyclists preparing for their first racing season this spring. More than half of the team members have participated in getfit for the past two years. “We ride bikes a lot and prefer doing it outside if it’s above 15 degrees Fahrenheit,” says team captain Zuzana Trnovcova. In lieu of actual medals, each Cycling Sistas member will receive a $20 gift card to City Sports.
Taking home the silver medal (actually a $10 gift card to Sebastian’s) were the ice-skating athletes of Blatieshoe. The team, made up of current and alumni members of MIT’s Figure Skating Club, is participating in getfit for the third year and (more…)

8,850 minutes? Seriously??
February 17, 2009
That’s how much exercise time the Powder Hounds team, from Lincoln Laboratory, logged in Week Two of the getfit@mit challenge (just in case you were wondering, that averages out to a stunning 1,106 minutes of exercise per week—or almost 18 and a half hours—for each team member).
Super-exercisers—teams and individuals who rack up large numbers of minutes in excess of each week’s goal—aren’t at any advantage when it comes to participating in getfit@mit. They’re no more likely to win prizes; they don’t receive any special recognition; they don’t even get an extra tee-shirt. What they do receive is a hefty dose of skepticism from many other getfitters.
By about this time every year, we start hearing from participants who, like the great majority, are struggling just to reach each week’s goal: “Are these guys for real?” “C’mon! They’ve got to be cheating!” or “How is that much exercise even possible?”
Well, wonder no more. We asked; they answered.
Rich Taylor of As Thyme Goes By, whose teammates each logged an average of 603 minutes of exercise in Week Two, gets it done by biking. A lot. Even with a broken hip. (more…)
Week Five is “Team Spirit” week!
February 23, 2009
The second special team competition of this year’s getfit@mit challenge is set for this week–Week Five (February 23-March 1)–and will reward “team spirit.” To earn “team spirit” points, at least three team members must participate in an activity together. The more team members participating, the more points your team can earn. (Note that all exercise totals will be weighted by total number of team members, so there is no advantage to larger teams.) Of course, these “team activities” will also count toward individual exercise totals for the week.
To participate in this special team competition, just download a “Team Spirit” log to record your team exercise activities, number of team members participating in each activity, and total minutes. Then return the filled-out form as an email attachment to getfit@mit.edu by 5 p.m. on Tuesday, March 3, 2009. Rules and complete directions are on the log sheet. The winning team will be announced on Friday, March 6. Go, teams!
Global Waist Management wins Best Team Name
February 13, 2008
The voters have spoken, and the winner in this year’s getfit@mit Best Team Name contest is… Global Waist Management. Each member of the team will receive a bag of tortilla chips and a tee-shirt courtesy of Food Should Taste Good.
The team led the voting among 10 finalists nominated by getfit@mit participants. Other finalists were My 401k is dropping faster than my weight, Weight Weight…Don’t Tell Me!, Geeks in Sneaks, I Want to Look Good Naked, The Fitness Protection Program, I can haz fitnuss?,” Flab u Less, Asset Reductions, and Angry Fat Kids.
The Global Waist Management team is composed primarily of staff members from the Student and Administrative Information Services area of Information Systems and Technology (IS&T), all of whom have done the getfit challenge at least once before. One of their work colleagues, Ken Le Vie, actually came up with the “Waist Management” name, but the word “Global” was added, because the eight members hail from New Zealand, China, Germany, Ireland, and the U.S., said team co-captain Ben Cole. “And half of our team actually is in management,” he added.
What’s their exercise motivation? “We have one team member training for this year’s Boston Marathon,” Cole said, “but the rest of us have more modest goals such as keeping up with our kids on the slopes. We’re looking forward to this week’s getfit@mit Winter Games contest, and we expect to tally up lots of minutes.”

There will be more winners in Week Three and in all the weeks to come, so keep exercising!
Go for the gold in the getfit@mit Winter Games!
February 9, 2009
This week (Feb. 9-15) your team can earn gold, silver, or bronze medals (getfit organizers reserve the right to substitute other fabulous prizes for actual medals) in the 2009 getfit@mit Winter Games. Just keep track of the minutes each team member spends participating in any official Winter Olympic sport (biathlon, bobsleigh, skeleton, curling, ice hockey, luge, figure skating, speed skating, downhill skiing, ski jumping, freestyle skiing, cross country skiing, or snowboarding) or any other activity done outdoors. Official flags and anthems are not required.
To participate in this special team competition, just download a “Winter Games” log to record your qualifying activities and total minutes. Then return the filled-out form as an email attachment to getfit@mit.edu by 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 17, 2009. Rules and complete directions are on the log sheet. The winning team will be announced on Friday, February 20. Go, teams!
Official tee-shirt design is chosen!
February 6, 2009
The votes are in, and participants in the 2009 getfit@mit challenge have chosen this year’s official tee-shirt design. For her efforts, junior Crystal Mao, the design’s creator, has won an iTouch and the opportunity to see her design worn by thousands of sweaty people.
Mao, a junior double-majoring in Course 20 and Course 15 (Biological Engineering and Management Science), is participating in getfit for the first time this year as a member of team get!fat–or participating “officially,” we should say. Mao and some friends wanted to participate last year but missed the registration deadline. “However, we did try to follow the weekly goals on our own,” she says. “One of my technologically gifted friends even coded a minute-tracker for us to use, similar to the one that getfit has!” Mao even wrote a paper about her experiences for a managerial psychology class, using getfit@mit as an example of the motivational effectiveness of team-based goals.
Mao’s current fitness activities of choice are running, swimming, figure skating, and badminton. Her tee-shirt design, she explains, is “an acknowledgment that fitness is about the inner struggle to stretch yourself –both physically and mentally.” She credits the MIT homepage for inspiration. “I love checking the homepage every day for a new graphic, and seeing how the letters ‘MIT’ are incorporated into images in creative ways that also happen to relate to whatever exciting thing is currently happening at the Institute,” Mao says.
The 2009 tee-shirts will be distributed to participants at special mid-point events on campus and at Lincoln Laboratory on March 12, 2009.

There will be more winners in Week Two and in all the weeks to come, so keep exercising!
Extra Tunnel Walks added to schedule
February 3, 2009
About 75 people participated in two tunnel walks last week, and two additional tunnel walks have been added to this week’s events schedule. The Wednesday (2/4) walk will begin in Lobby 7 at 12:15; Friday’s (2/6) walk will leave from the E25 atrium at 1:15. Both walks will last about 45 minutes and will cover approximately 2.5 miles of MIT’s extensive tunnel system (along with a few stairwells and above-ground corridors for the sake of variety). Wear comfortable shoes!

Who’s the Lab’s Biggest Loser?
February 2, 2009
Thirty-two Lincoln Laboratory employees are participating in a special weight-loss and nutrition-education program in conjunction with this year’s getfit@mit challenge. To be part of The Lab’s Biggest Loser, applicants were required to have a body mass index (BMI) of 27 or higher (what’s my BMI?) and a healthy blood pressure. The 12 men and 20 women who were selected to be part of this year’s program have BMIs ranging from 29 to 54, with an average of approximately 37. Participants, now assigned to four “platoons,” are now working toward their weight-loss goals through individualized diet and exercise programs.
Throughout this year’s getfit@mit challenge, we’ll be following the progress of the Lab’s Biggest Losers through a blog on the getfit website. We’ll be reporting on their activities and progress, and individual participants will be sharing their stories as well. Readers can use the blog’s comment feature to ask their own questions about nutrition, exercise, and weight loss, or just to talk about your own experiences. Though only 32 people at Lincoln Laboratory can participate in the program this year, we hope this program can prove both inspirational and educational to all the other people in our community who are also trying to lose weight and eat better.
A healthy game plan for Super Bowl Sunday
January 27, 2009
Super Bowl Sunday is a chance to enjoy good football surrounded by family, friends, and lots of high-calorie foods. We asked MIT Medical nutritionist Anna Jasonides, R.D., for some help in keeping our game-time snacking from going into overtime. She offered these tips:
- Prioritize your calories. Avoid snacks you can have any time. Select treats you don’t often eat, and enjoy them in moderation.
- It’s not what you eat; it’s how much. Don’t be afraid to enjoy special-occasion foods, just don’t eat too much of them. Sip water or seltzer with lime between bites; this will slow your rate of eating and allow your stomach to start feeling full.
- Don’t save up all your calories for the Super Bowl party. Avoid skipping meals in anticipation of the event. If you start the first quarter hungry, you’ll be more likely to overeat. Instead, have a healthy snack just before the game to curb your appetite. Have a bowl of vegetable soup, a small salad, or half a sandwich.
- Wait before going back for seconds. Wait at least 10 to 20 minutes before filling up your plate again. This gives your stomach time to tell your brain it’s full.
Off and running
January 26, 2009
The 2009 getfit@mit challenge is off and running—and walking, biking, swimming, and skiing! Registration for the fifth annual getfit@mit challenge has ended with the largest number of participants ever—more than 2,700 individual participants on 389 teams. We’ll have more exact numbers, along with demographic information, once the dust settles and people activate their individual accounts. Please note that the deadline for activating your getfit@mit account—and putting yourself on the list to receive an awesome, free getfit tee-shirt—is Monday, February 2.
Design a tee-shirt, win an iTouch!
January 26, 2009
Once more, we’re giving you the chance to design this year’s official getfit@mit tee-shirt. If you’ve ever imagined your tee-shirt design worn by thousands of sweaty people, this is your chance to make that dream a reality. Oh, and you can also win an iTouch!
The deadline for submitting a design is the end of this week, Friday, January 30, 2009. And beginning next week, every getfit participant will have the chance to cast a vote for the winning design.
